Academic/Traditional
(No-Philosophy Philosophy)General Philosophy
The teacher is in charge. Kindergarten readiness is stressed, along with traditional academic skills such as phonics, letters, numbers, time-telling, and everyday etiquette.
How It Plays Out in the Classroom
Teachers decide the curriculum and drive the day's events. Schedules are firmly followed, and while there are games and activity areas, free play isn't the focus.
The Fine Print
More "reading-writing-'rithmetic" than the other options, these schools stress tangible, typical skills: sitting quietly, playing nicely, following instructions, and completing tasks.
Sticks and Stones (and Criticism)
Naysayers feel that 3- and 4-year-olds aren't ready for this much structure and quiet learning time. Is it too much, too soon? Can't we all just have a little bit of fun before kindergarten?
