Developmental/Progressive
General Philosophy
It's based on a belief that children learn best through free play and experimentation. Socializing and group activities are emphasized, but kids aren't pressured to keep up with others.
How It Plays Out in the Classroom
Items such as water and sand tables, blocks, and costumes lend themselves to cooperative, imaginative play. Letters and numbers are introduced only as kids express interest.
The Fine Print
There's quite a bit of variation from school to school: One mom's progressive might be another's structured. Kids are encouraged to indulge their high spirits, meaning classes can often be messy and loud.
Sticks and Stones (and Criticism)
Skeptics ask whether 3-year-olds should really be running the show. Plus, what some parents love—the noise, the clutter, the getting down-and-dirty—other parents find intolerable.
