Montessori
General Philosophy
Teachers strive to help kids understand the world, achieve a sense of order, and develop independent thought. Children learn at their own pace, interacting within mixed age groupings.
How It Plays Out in the Classroom
Task-oriented activities emphasize "skills learning"—defined as everything from ABCs to sweeping. Toys are designed to teach practical lessons (necklaces with beads for counting, say).
The Fine Print
Strict Montessoris, which are affiliated with Association Montessori Internationale, discourage fantasy play and artwork. More liberal schools tend to be part of the American Montessori Society.
Sticks and Stones (and Criticism)
Some feel that Montessori can discourage creativity and imagination (though we have yet to meet anyone who has a problem with the teaching-them-how-to-sweep thing).
