RIE
(Resources for Infant Educarers)General Philosophy
More like pre-preschool, RIE teaches newborns to 2-year-olds confidence and independence through "self-directed" activities. Parents and caregivers learn about their kids by observing.
How It Plays Out in the Classroom
"Self-directed" means children are encouraged to follow their interests with minimal adult interference. A child playing with one toy won't be interrupted by a teacher leading him toward another.
The Fine Print
Practitioners believe that children learn gross motor skills best without adult help. Slides, for example, are off-limits until a child is able to climb up and come down on her own. Ditto with swings.
Sticks and Stones (and Criticism)
Some argue that the emphasis on observation allows caregivers to ignore the emotional needs of children. Other abstainers say RIE comes with too many strictures and directions.
