Parent Cooperative
General Philosophy
Running the gamut of educational theories, co-ops have one tenet in common: Parents play an important role in educating their children and have to take an active part in their schooling.
How It Plays Out in the ClassroomMostly owned by parent-members, the schools employ trained teachers and directors. Parents frequently assist in classrooms and manage fundraising, administrative tasks, and building upkeep.
The Fine PrintThough participation is sort of the whole point, some co-ops offer parent "buyouts" for an extra fee on a limited basis, for those unable to meet time and duty commitments.
Sticks and Stones (and Criticism)Remember Sartre's "Hell is other people"? Substitute the word "parents" and you get an idea of what the school year can be like. Also, some co-ops don't allow caregivers to pinch-hit for parents.
