More and more parents who chose to snip are finding themselves home from the hospital with an infant sporting a loose or partially removed foreskin. So this isn't a time for shyness—it's a lot easier to address aesthetic concerns up front than to fix them later. If you've decided to circumcise your son, ask these specific questions before the procedure to ensure that you get the results you want.

  1. When will the circumcision be performed? Some hospitals will try to do it right after birth, but it is better health-wise to wait a few days.
  2. Who will be executing the procedure? If a resident is going to perform the circumcision, can parents request to have it done by a surgeon of their choice?
  3. How much skin is the surgeon planning on removing, and what tools and steps are involved?
  4. How painful will it be for the baby, and what anesthetic options are available?
  5. How should the penis be cared for post-circumcision to avoid infection or other complications?
