Busy Roads/ Allergy Risk Link

A study found that children who grow up next to busy roads are 50 percent more likely to be at risk for allergy symptoms. The level of exposure for about 6,000 kids ages 4 and 6 were examined in relation to how far they lived from busy roads at different times in their lives. Researchers consistently found strong links between living distance to busy roads and allergy symptoms. Those living closer than 50 meters to a busy road were at the highest risk.

Bunk Beds: Big-kid Retreat or a Trip to the ER?

About 36,000 kids of all ages get hurt from bunk beds each year. Most injuries are to the head, face, and neck, usually occurring due to a fall from the top bunk. Kids under the age of 6 accounted for almost half of the injuries. Not just bumps and bruises occur from these falls, but sometimes concussions or even broken bones can result. They recommend never putting a kid under the age of 6 on the top bunk and to check the bunk bed weight limits when out shopping.

Cholesterol Screening for Kids

New guidelines have been issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics recommending wider cholesterol screening for kids as young as 8 and more aggressive use of cholesterol-lowering drugs as well. Under the current guidelines they say 30 to 60 percent of children with high cholesterol were being missed. They say there is growing evidence that signs of heart disease show up in childhood and with 30 percent of the nation?s kids obese, they are concerned that early heart attacks and diabetes could be on the rise. The cholesterol-lowering drugs might be their best hope for prevention.
