Sleepy Princess and the Pea

In the pantheon of fairy tales, "The Princess and the Pea" may never have reached "Cinderella" fame. But the implausible story has inspired an enchanting board game for preschoolers. Within a stiff cardboard bed frame—complete with wooden pea at the bottom—kids pile up different-size pieces of bedding (mattresses, blankets, pillows), working together to construct the royal miss's many-layered bed. The challenge is to keep the pieces from toppling over. Think of it as a plush Jenga, a dexterity challenge for little hands—and, frankly, bigger ones, too. But keep an eye on that pea: It's not only easy to lose but also poses a choking hazard for kids under 3 years.—Christopher Healy
