Kooky Kids Cooking

Clare Crespo's guide to fun in the kitchen and beyond

By Christine Lennon

Quick Craft

For Halloween, Crespo and Ruby make eyeball decorations. "Start with Christmas or Styrofoam balls, and glue on construction-paper pupils," Crespo says. "Then draw on the veins."

Inspiration

The 1970s book Amazing Magical Jell-O Desserts (General Foods) "molded my brain," she says. "Jell-O was my first big art supply."

Cool Tool

The BatterFinger spatula, says Crespo, "is perfect for frosting cupcakes. And it's sanitary—kids can dip this in the batter instead of their actual fingers."

Creepy Sweet

Crespo's Buried Alive cupcakes require no baking skills: Buy cupcakes, top them with crumbled cookies, and insert a doll hand.

DIY Costume

She suggests going green for Halloween: "Staple fake vines from a craft store onto a green sweatsuit, and collect candy in a watering can."
