This is something my mom and I made when I was little. The tradition continues with my daughter, Xea. She loves to make this dish with me on Thanksgiving, mostly because the marshmallows remind her of s'mores—one of our favorite treats.
- 6 large yams, pierced several times with fork
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- Pinch nutmeg
- Pinch salt
- 2 sticks butter
- 1/2 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
- 1 bag large marshmallows
- Preheat the oven to 400° F. Place the yams on a baking sheet and bake them for approximately 1 hour or until cooked.
- Peel the yams and mash them in a mixing bowl with brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, salt, butter, and walnuts. Mix until all the ingredients are incorporated.
- Place the mixture in a casserole pot and cover the top with marshmallows. Bake it in the oven until the marshmallows are golden and crispy, about 7 to 10 minutes.
