Little Extras, Big Impact

Many museums host parties in a classroom, which can end up looking pretty generic. Add a few touches of your own to make the party markedly more festive (just ask beforehand whether you're allowed to bring decorations).

A color theme Pick two or three hues (say, blue and green) and keep them in mind when you're buying paper plates, a tablecloth, wall decals, and hats. Using a hole punch and ribbon, string together sheets of paper that spell out a birthday greeting in the colors you've chosen.

Festive globesSuspend colorful paper lanterns from the ceiling so they hang just above kid level, creating a party atmosphere.

Blue with green striped paper lanterns ($8 for six), and small yellow paper lanterns ($13 for 12), Oriental Trading Company.
