Part One: Mixing the Batter

Kids are split into two groups, each responsible for making one layer of the cake.

1 Before kids arrive, measure out the ingredients into small bowls arranged on a tray or cutting board. You'll need to do this twice, so each group has a set of ingredients for its layer. (Note: Measure out half of each ingredient for each group.)

2 Divide the kids into groups (the ideal number is four per group, and everyone should be at least 4 years old). Designate one parent per group to read the instructions and lead the children through the steps. Involve everyone—have one child stir while another pours, one hold the pan while another greases it. When the batter is ready, place the pans in the oven (this is not a job for the little pastry chefs).
