Many bakeries will make a hemispheric "globe" cake on request (or see below for directions). Another easy option is to give a regular cake an international twist by topping it with mini flags.
Globe Cake
- Prepare any cake mix according to its instructions.
- Grease and flour a 4-liter oven-safe Pyrex bowl.
- Pour the cake mix into the bowl, and bake at 350° F for 50 to 55 minutes (check center for doneness with a knife).
- Remove from oven and let stand for 15 minutes before inverting the bowl onto a wire rack.
- Use fondant to decorate the cake. Easier to use than traditional frosting, this doughlike icing provides a smooth surface on which to draw your map.
- Using a globe or a map as your guide, draw continents with a toothpick and fill them in with green icing.
