Jell-O is a scientific wonder in itself. Explain to the kids that gelatin powder is made of long molecule chains. When you add hot water, those chains break. But as the mixture cools, the molecules rebond around pockets of water, resulting in that wiggly consistency.
For the Petri Treats
- 2 3-ounce boxes Jell-O
- 14 petri dishes
- gummi worms and mini jawbreakers
- Follow the quick-set directions on the Jell-O packages.
- Pour the liquid mixture into petri dishes (each package makes about seven dishes' worth), then have the kids add candy "growths."
- Place the dishes on a tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes to set.
