Mahar's tricks for livening up kids' rooms and cutting clutter
By Jane Margolies

- Corral Odds & Ends
Art supplies and Emmett's collections of rocks and shells are displayed in canisters. "I like glass jars because they're clear—plastic gets too cloudy. Emmett hasn't broken one yet."

- Archive Masterpieces
Mahar set up a metal flat file, where Emmett stores his artwork folders, labeling drawers by subject (trees, trucks, etc.). She has her son practice writing by signing his drawings.

- Add Some Green
"Plants teach children about life cycles and about how to care for things," says Mahar, who places low-maintenance succulents like jades and echeverias around the playroom-studio.
