My people were never ones for family photos (though for a heady moment, we did own a disc camera). So now my husband, Jamie, and I have family maps. Like the Pilgrims, I started with Massachusetts, needlepointing the state and adding tiny pink French knots for our hometowns, where we married, my parents' house, and my sisters' places. Then I added Jamie's dad's hometown, his mom's, Nana and Pappa's, Grammie and Grampa's, and Nana and Buck's. I've since made maps with his parents', brother's, and sister's places and those of our friends' in Buffalo. Not having snapshots, it turns out, isn't so bad: Everyone we love is still right there on our wall.
