Kerner met his wife, commercial and music-video director Lisa Rubisch, on a blind date nine years ago. Rubisch says having a sex guru for a husband has its advantages—but it's not that they're having tantric-sex marathons after the kids go to bed. Rather, Kerner's job forces them to be more aware of sex because it's part of their daily life. "Many times, Ian will open up on TV or in his writing, revealing something personal that will really strike me," she says. "When I hear him warning women not to wear flannel nightgowns, I'll look down at the chicken-print thermal underwear I've been in all day and think, Jeez, maybe I should put on some lipstick."
On my Loop
My proudest parenting moment was...
"...being on a plane with my son during truly frightening turbulence and making him feel like it was just a fun roller-coaster ride."
An activity I don't love but do anyway because my child loves it so much is...
"...going to interactive science museums that are still based on technology from the 1960s."
I define downtime as...
"...watching Battlestar Galactica on my iPod in bed. And/or sex."
I wish I had more time for...
"...friends, reading, movies, exercise, going on dates with my wife."
Bedtime is always smoother when...
"...we give in and let our older son sleep in our bed."
My meltdown-prevention tactic is...
"...bourbon, neat. For me, not the kids."
