YARN

Mine your sewing kit or knitting box for yards of inspiration.

Mobile

Materials: Two wire hangers, tin snips, electrical tape, yarn, scissors, craft glue (such as Sobo), and wax paper.

  1. Bend one hanger hook into a small loop. Cut the other hook off with the snips.
  2. Fit one hanger inside the other at a right angle. Tape them together at the neck.
  3. Create yarn bundles and dip each wad of yarn in diluted craft glue (70 percent glue, 30 percent water). Lay them on wax paper to dry.
  4. Hang the dry bundles from the mobile frame with varying lengths of yarn.

Lamp-Shade Upgrade

Materials: Tape, yarn, scissors, and lamp shade.

  1. Tape one end of a piece of yarn inside the shade at the top. Wrap the other around the shade at the bottom, creating slanted lines with half-inch gaps at the top for a diamond pattern (or tighter gaps for a striped pattern).
  2. Once you've wrapped it all the way around, remove the tape. Tie the ends together.
  3. To achieve the diamond effect, repeat, going in the opposite direction.

Tassel

Materials: Yarn and scissors.

  1. Cut strips of yarn twice as long as your desired tassel length. Pile them in a stack.
  2. Tie one longer piece of yarn around the center of the stack, securing it with a knot.
  3. Fold the stack in half. Wrap another piece of yarn several times around the neck. Tie.
  4. Trim the tassel ends to make them even. Attach to whatever you like with the one long center piece of yarn that's left hanging.
