TAD LINCOLN

Eight-year-old Tad Lincoln—known in the White House as the tyrant—both charmed and horrified visitors to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. By all accounts, President Lincoln overindulged his youngest son, often abruptly leaving cabinet-level meetings because Tad wanted "Papa" to take him to a toy store or for a pony ride. Extremely mischievous, Tad once hitched two goats to a dining room chair and rode full steam into a formal room where Mary Lincoln was giving an official White House tour. President Lincoln found his son endlessly amusing, and rarely disciplined him.
