That Mom

We all have a moment when we spy That Mom. She's the one who looks like she knows something we don't. It's the way she belts her sweater, or the way her ballet-flat-and-skinny-jean combo radically upgrades the drop-off uniform. Lucky for us, these fashion mavens aren't stingy with their secrets.

Who: Liana Pai

Owner of Liana Boutique, mother of Ima, 5, and Mica, 3.

Why:

Because we swear she's cracked the formula for flawless-yet-seemingly-effortless style—it's what we at Cookie like to call the cost-per-wear model. As the owner of a beautifully curated Manhattan boutique, Pai sees all kinds of designs and has learned what's worth buying. "Investing in well-chosen items can make for a great wardrobe," she explains. "Some of the pricier brands wear so well that they actually last much longer with the right care." She also knows that buying ahead pays off. "If I find great bargains at sample sales or on eBay, I'm never afraid to buy for the following year."

What she's loving...

For herself: "Just getting out of the house can feel like an impossibility with two kids, so I always have my little black dress as a go-to. I just add boots, a sweater, and a little lipstick, and I am good to go!"

For her girls: "Bonpoint's white cotton shirts and dresses are just beautiful pieces. I know a lot of people fear that white is impractical, but all you need is a little bleach, and they'll come out looking crisp and clean."
