Design Tips

Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter of Serena & Lily share their favorite tricks and products for kids' rooms.

Paint the Crib

A coat of paint "can turn a classic crib into an audacious statement," the two write in their book. (They also sell painted cribs of their own design.)

Go Thrifting

Scour flea markets for items that will add personality. Kanter fell so in love with an old rocking horse that was photographed for the book that she took it home. "My kids try to ride it," she says, "but it's mainly for show."

Create a "Sky"

Even if you keep the walls white, Kanter and Dugan suggest giving a "nod to the skies" by painting the ceiling pale blue.

Get Eclectic

Accessorize with Moroccan pieces like tiny carved or inlaid tables. "Their character and scale are perfect for kids' rooms," says Dugan.

Make it Comfy

If you have space, consider adding a double chaise to a kid's room. "Now that we're out of the glider stage, I use it to read to my kids before bed," says Kanter.
