Holiday Table Settings

These scenarios should serve as permission not to match and as inspiration to abandon fussy centerpieces in favor of something that's, well, much more fun.

Decorate with mini pine trees in sake cups and with tiny houses, which the kids can construct: Have them glue plain paper onto well-rinsed small milk cartons, cut out windows and doors, then place battery-powered lights inside them.

The charge is twofold: Make your holiday table feel special, but also make it your own. (This is, after all, not your mother's dining room, all but cordoned off behind a velvet rope.)

Even if you don't have matching place settings for everyone, you can still set a beautiful, cohesive table with various white dishes you've accumulated over the years or borrowed from neighbors.
