"Choose a location for your sale that has steady traffic," says Witt. Think schools, farmers' markets, offices, soccer games—"anyplace where there may be a large number of hungry people."

"Talk with everyone you know about what you're doing and why," says Holt. "We have yet to hear of anyone who hasn't helped when asked—but you have to ask."

Limit your baked goods to easy-to-make cookies and cupcakes. "Go for regional favorites and classics," says Witt. "Chocolate-chip cookies always do well, no matter where you live."
