The Axe Murderer and the Advent Calendar
Kids who get an advent calendar from the city of Hanover, Germany, this Christmas will have to get past an axe wielding serial killer to see what's behind flap #1.
The calendar, already on sale at tourist offices, shows
children singing carols and laughing as Santa hands out presents, right alongside a man peeking out
from behind a tree with a meat cleaver in his left hand.
More than 80 years ago, Fritz Haarmann killed 24 young men, chopped up their corpses and dumped their remains in the local river Leine. He was sentenced to death and beheaded in 1925.
But instead of saying "oops!" firing the artist and pulling the calendar off the shelves, the head of the Hanover tourism board, Hans-Christian Nolte, defended the calendar, saying:
He is part of our city's history. Even on guided tours the serial killer's story is told.
Yeah, well, so is Hitler. Where's his flap?
