From the Magazine: Costume Cookies

costume cookie.jpgAs our October issue makes its way to mailboxes and newsstands, keep an eye out for this brilliant costume cookie idea from Clare Crespo--so perfect for Halloween parties! The end result from the magazine is above, and click the link below for her instructions for making them at home (along with some great modeling by her daughter Ruby).

cookie process.jpgFor the cookies:

1 cup butter (softened)
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

20 wooden popsicle sticks

1. Beat sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Mix in the vanilla and egg for about a minute. Gradually add the flour and mix until incorporated.

2. Separate dough into three balls. Pat balls into disk shapes and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill for 3 hours.

3. Preheat the oven to 325° F.

4. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or Silpat mats.

5. With a lightly floured rolling pin on a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

6. Using a small sharp knife cut out desired shapes for your costumes (mustache, eyeballs, nose, ears, fangs, etc.).

7. Place Popsicle sticks on cookie sheets, and using a flat butter knife or small spatula, carefully lift the shapes and place each on a stick. Press down slightly so dough adheres to the stick while baking.

8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool.
