Quick End-of-Summer Getaways

Now that the end of summer is approaching, it's time to soak up the last few drops of sunshine. Here are some ideas for great weekend getaways close to New York City, Chicago, and L.A.

Brilliantsail_5 From New York City:
Explore all things nautical at the quaint coastal town of Mystic, Connecticut, which has a historic seaport and an aquarium where you can actually pet the penguins and whales. Also cool: the colonial-era Olde Mistick Village and the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Preserve, which offers eight miles of hiking trails.

More ideas:
Long Beach Island, New Jersey
Hershey, Pennsylvania
Woodstock, Vermont

B26_file3_41065_3 From Chicago:
Head to Galena, Illinois, where you can visit local farmers' markets and wineries, take flight in a hot-air balloon, trot out on a trail ride, or get a taste of local history on a carriage or trolley ride or a walking tour (older kids might like the ghost-themed version).

More ideas:
Door County, Wisconsin
South Haven, Michigan
Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Flowerfiels_2 From Los Angeles:

The biggest family draw to the city of Carlsbad, California might be its immense Legoland park, but you should also check out the foothill Flower Fields, the hands-on Museum of Making Music, and seven miles of balmy beaches.

More ideas:
Catalina Island, California
Santa Barbara, California
San Luis Obispo, California
