The resort specializes in courses designed for children, including one for toddlers ages 3 to 4, which teaches parents how to teach their children to ski. If you're flying Alaska Airlines from Los Angeles or San Francisco, kids under 12 get free roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, and lift tickets when you book your trip before January 31, 2009. "There are four airport choices within a reasonable (three-hour) drive from Waterville Valley, which means you'll have a lot of options for flight times and fares," says Schwartz, adding that the town's proximity to Boston and Providence makes it a great destination if you're family wants to see more than just fresh powder.

"Maine often gets overlooked when people think of East Coast ski destinations, but Bethel is a great place for a winter getaway," says Schwartz. "Plus, since it doesn't have the hype of some other destinations, it's less crowded."

The nearby Sunday River Resort boasts 668 skiable acres and 131 trails, and offers complimentary lift tickets for children under 5.
