When In ... London

weebirdy.jpgI just came across weebirdy.com, a brilliant blog written by a former magazine editor from Sydney, who now lives in London and writes about her favorite shops and restaurants and finds in her new town. She does "shopping tours" on her site, and you can really get a sense of what the different stores are like, which I appreciate. I can't tell you how many times I have torn an article mentioning a store from a magazine, traveled across town to get to the shop in question, and found it wasn't worth the schlep. She also has a complete listing of all her favorites attached to a Google map. It's not particularly mom-oriented, but it has plenty of listings of stores with objects for the whole family, and her restaurant and café choices are spot on (Ottolenghi is probably the best café I have ever been to). And because she makes it supereasy to navigate and manage your time, it's especially great to have with kids in tow.

As Seen On ... Kiddieuptravel.com

toot.jpg
We just discovered kiddieuptravel.com, and we love it! It’s worth looking at all of the blogger's posts (her pictures and content are all really great), but this one about the water taxi in Santa Barbara, California, called Lil’ Toot, is especially cute. The boat takes you from the harbor to the wharf and back, and it’s run on nonpolluting biodiesel. The exhaust smells like French fries or doughnuts!

Misery Loves Company

This new website enlists writers to describe their most disastrous travel experiences. I particularly like the post about the worst restaurant themes.

A Feel-Good Start to 2009

Passports1Some of you might remember that a few weeks back we teamed up with some of our favorite travel bloggers at  Passports with Purpose to help support Heifer International, a nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate hunger and poverty around the world. We also asked you, our lovely readers, to donate and we are happy to announce that the program was an astounding success!

According to our pals at Two and a Half Travelers, the initiative raised $7,420, which is nearly 50% more than the initial goal! Many thanks if you were able to donate. Now we're all full of warm fuzzy feelings on this chilly winter day.

She Travels, She Blogs, She Rocks

Belize If you've always suspected that MTV veejays led cooler lives than you both on and off the camera, well, you're probably right. Case in point? Simone Angel. After she left MTV Europe, she got married and had two kids, but instead of settling down in suburbia, she and her husband moved to Central America and started Belize Jungle Dome, an adventure travel company and resort. She now splits her time between Belize and her family's new home in Aruba, and you can check out her travel tips and daily adventures (like almost running over a wild goat) at Simone's Family Travel Blog. Oh yeah, she also writes a music blog and sings in a band, proving rock star dreams don't have to end with diaper duty. If living vicariously through Simone isn't enough and she inspires you to chuck it all and transfer your family to paradise, check out her moving to Belize guide.
