Serena Williams Takes Bad Sportsmanship to a New Level

Double X
September 14, 2009

"Last night while Kim Clijsters celebrated her U.S. Open victory, Serena Williams walked on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards and quipped that singer Pink, suspended high above the stage, wouldn’t “have to worry about stepping over any lines” during her performance. The statement was a clear nod to Williams’s Saturday’s semifinal match against Clijsters, but much of the humor was lost on the crowd. The U.S.’s top female tennis player might be eager to make light of her behavior, but the real line that she crossed wasn’t the white one marking the court—it was the moral boundary she jumped over when she threatened a line judge (a decision that, in addition to an earlier warning, cost her $10,500 in fines and potentially more).

It went like this: After the first set of the match, Williams was issued a warning for slamming down her racket. Then in what proved to be the final game, she was called for a foot fault on her second serve—resulting in a point penalty that just so happened to be on match point (making Clijsters the winner). The call was certainly questionable, but it in no way justified what came next. Williams raised her racket at the judge and said, “I swear to God I'm [expletive] going to take this [expletive] ball and shove it down your [expletive] throat, you hear that? I swear to God.""

Nadya Suleman, the queen of bad-parent porn

Los Angeles Times
August 20, 2009

"By the time you read this, the world will have peered inside the undoubtedly depressing and quite possibly child-endangering world of the nation's reigning social pariah. I'm referring to Wednesday night's two-hour special on Fox, "Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage." At press time, I'd only seen clips, but I think I can guarantee that we're in for another wave of Octo-villification, not to mention some major sanctimony.

Nadya Suleman, in case anyone's lucky enough to need a briefing, is the woman who gave birth to eight premature babies in January, the result of the implantation of six embryos, two of which split. She was later revealed to be not only single and unemployed but also mother to an additional six children, all of whom were also conceived through in vitro fertilization. The TV special, made up of footage collected by the online magazine Radar-Online.com, included scenes of Suleman attempting to soothe several crying babies and, in a moment of self-reflection, saying, "I screwed up my life. I screwed up my kids' lives. ... What was I thinking?""

Watchdogs Decry 'Danger' to Suleman Octuplets

MSNBC
July 28, 2009

"Claiming that a litter of puppies would get more legal protection, a child-actor advocate said that Nadya Suleman's octuplets are being exposed to potential dangers by her decision to allow a reality show to chronicle the next three years of their lives.

"It's dangerous. This is not safe," Paul Petersen, a former child actor himself, told TODAY's Meredith Vieira Tuesday from California. "We've got to stop this."

Petersen, who founded the advocacy group A Minor Consideration, had filed a legal petition to have an advocate appointed to look after the financial interests of Suleman's octuplets and six other children. On Monday, a judge in Orange County, Calif., granted the request and appointed an advocate, who is to file a report by Aug. 31.

Suleman's attorney, Arthur J. LaCilento, said he will appeal the decision and accused Petersen and his lawyer, celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, of "grandstanding” and being "nosy."
