Shop the Catalog: CB2

Cover_spring_2

Cookie's market editor Meryl Levin shares her top picks from the new CB2 spring catalog--because she knows you haven't had time for flipping since your water broke.

Marcelsofabarks8

1. Marcel sofa, $1,099
"I love this bold graphic 70s-ish print. It would make a really fun statement, but I admit it's for the brave decorating soul. For the more timid, who still like the clean lines and compact scale of this design, there is a solid neutral option as well."

Whitcoffeetable3qs8

2. Whit coffee table, $299
"I can not get over how beautiful this natural wood coffee table is, and how inexpensive!  You could pay ten times as much for a similar piece, but now you don't have to.  The style of the legs and the detailing at the joints are wonderful too. I'm obsessed."

Dempseychairpearl3qs8

3. Dempsey chair, $599
"It's got mid-century panache and looks great from all angles, especially the side. I would put two opposite a sofa (perhaps the Marcel?) for a very chic conversation nook."

Ergodrinktbllobster3qs8

4. Ergo drink table, $60
"This powder-coated side table has such a great modern silhouette, and is just the sort of piece that can set a room apart. Especially in red (it also comes in white), it's a playful finishing touch."

Graphdeskwhite3qs8

5. Graph desk, $299
"Any home office (or master bedroom or living room) will benefit from the hip styling of this desk. I like that it feels fun and casual, like it's meant for emailing friends and shopping online more than
for working."

Great Idea: Stroller Hook

Strollaway1

The stroller is the ultimate impediment to tidiness, what with the unruly size, the wheels, the need for easy access. What a great idea, then, to hang it up and out of the way. The StrollAway is an over-the-door hanger on steroids. Adjustable to nine positions, it will securely grab most strollers--even double ones! When you don't need it, fold it flush to the door. Genius!

Labour Movement

Labourwait3

We are newly obsessed with Labour and Wait, which we just spotted on Design Mom (man, she's good!) The East London store has functional essentials that are simple and beautiful (case in point, the egg spoons and doorstop below).

contemporary storage ideas

Minimaliststorage

Toy Box 1 ($195) is a refreshingly simple toy storage box. Hooray for the lack of decorative moons, cars, and hearts. The box also has a lift top with slow-closing hinge to protect precious little fingers, and the wheels allow for easy moving around. Oh, minimalistic little friend, we love you. Stool Kid Box ($120) is another contemporary storage idea from Boom. The drawer has handles on both sides and finish on all four sides, so it can be pulled out completely and used on its own as a side table, for storage, or both. Clean design with wheels make this stool box durable, mobile, and great addition to any room.

Top Ten Display Bookshelves

At_bookshelves_2

Our friends ohdeedoh have scavenged to find these great display bookshelves for kids' rooms. We love some of the little-known resources they've unearthed like RonJuneShop and Discount School Supply. Worth a bit of browsing to see what other rooms you might find gems for...

And if you're wondering what to stock these shelves with, check out all of our kids' book reviews.

Good News for Nurseries

Crib_2

Gotta love that two our favorite companies have joined forces to make beautiful style more accessible. DwellStudio, purveyor of chic modern bedding, is joining the ranks of big-name designers (Michael Graves, Thomas O'Brien, et al) who've teamed with Target to offer high design at low prices. The line applies their signature graphic patterns to products for both Mom and Baby--and, of course, we're kinda partial to Baby.  Farm Girl crib set and skirt, $100, Soho crib, $290.

Alphabet Poster

Modernclassicsalphabet
For moms who want to teach their babes the alphabet and the importance of Eames and Gehry, we present the Alphabet of Design Classics poster. Designer Joel Pirela created it for his daughter Isabella and is now selling prints for $35. Wouldn't it look great in a nursery above, say, a Danish credenza?

chair makeover

Chair_revival
"I rescued this little Heywood Wakefield chair at an antique store. After a lot of sanding, a few coats of paint and some Amy Butler fabric, I've got myself a new chair. Total cost with the chair, paint, & fabric: $35! It will sit at my sewing desk, which unfortunately doesn't get as much use as it shoud." -- Angela Hardison, Mesa, Arizona

Readers, email us your furniture or room makeovers, and you may be featured on our website. We'd love to see your projects!

Get Hooked

Kapstok_hooks

While trolling Babygadget.com, we saw these great hooks from Kidz Lifestyle, which is in the Netherlands. "Kapstok" means "coat rack" and "jas" means "coat." But with Accroc letter hooks (below), you can spell whatever you want--in whatever language you want. What a great idea to keep towels and mounds of outerwear off the floor.

Big Designs for Little Dreamers

Bodalee

"Enough with the crib bedding, big kids need great linens, too." That's what Jeanice Skvaril thought when it was time to plan her son's room. Jeanice wanted alternatives to the mainstream commercial mediocrity offered by big retailers but at the same time, she didn’t want to subject her son to her own minimalist preferences.

Collaborating with a team of industry professionals, she created Bodalee, which now carries seven amazingly stylish kids linens. We are especially fond of the Trees Collection, which combines the bark in the sheet set with the jazzy bird and foliage duvet cover. There is nothing more relaxing as lying under a tree. Birds are chirping, squirrels are gathering nuts, and the bumblebees are bzzz, bzzzz, busy. What exciting new ideas will spring from this tranquil setting?

Her other groups have similar bright, linear motifs and would brighten up any kids room. Each twin-sized duvet cover, pillow sham, sheet and pillowcase is crafted from 250-thread count, 100 percent percale.

Punky Brewster Goes Green

Littleseed

Former child star Soleil Moon Frye is now a mom of two and apparently serious about giving them a healthy planet in which to grow up. Her eco-friendly shop, The Little Seed, has everything from BPA-free Green to Grow bottles (which we reviewed BPA-free bottles here) to Nursery Works cribs.

Knock, Knock: Chic Sophistication in Ohio

1278

When we interviewed Laura Naples about her gorgeous home, she was, as they say, ready to pop. Her baby was due in a matter of days, and Laura was "more excited than nervous." Although she and her husband had decided to find out their baby's sex--a girl--they'd agreed keep her name secret until she arrived. But now we can announce the exciting news: They've welcomed a healthy beautiful baby named Catherine Jo. Congratulations, Laura!

Nursery20finished1

First things first: Your house is insanely neat.
I've been nesting! It's probably the cleanest our house has ever been, getting ready for the baby.

How did you begin decorating the nursery?
With the glider and ottoman. I just love them, and their streamlined look can be incorporated into other rooms later.
The Luca glider is by Monte Design, from Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.

I love that pretty print.
My coworkers gave me the Binth numbers poster before I left my job. They knew I loved it.
The lavender Thomas Paul pillow is from Bluefly.com; the zigzag pillow is from Twinkle Living.

Nursery20finished3

How did you decide on the room's color scheme?
I wanted the room to be soothing and pretty, but not overly girly, so I arrived at the lavender/cream/brown combination. I also added metallic accents, like a silver IKEA mirror and a gold tray to hold wipes and lotions. You don't usually see metallic in a baby's room, so I thought it would be different, sophisticated--and sparkly!

Nursery20finished5

Where did you find the antique-looking dresser?
My husband's family gave to us. It was originally brown, but we painted it high-gloss white. Then I went around the edges with a bittersweet chocolate color.
The chain-link pulls are from Anthropologie; the lamp on the changing table is from Target.

How did you keep the edges even?
I began by using painter's tape, but it was a disaster. The paint dripped off since the surface wasn't smooth. So, instead, I just took a deep breath, used a thin foam brush and went free hand.

Master20bed

Your bedroom is a nice balance of feminine and masculine.
I could definitely have done a girly room! But I wanted my husband to feel comfy. The walls have a bit of pink; the covers have a bit of blue.
The bed is from Room & Board. The pillow shams and duvet cover are from Pottery Barn. The sheets and miror are from Target. The coverlet is from Anthropologie.

Master20wall

This photo wall is lovely. Can you tell us about some of the pictures?
The top frame has a photo from Bene Magazine. My husband and I spent a Thanksgiving in Rome, and this photo looks like the Caffe della Pace where we ate. The postcard of The Nut Gatherers, by the painter Bouguereau, is at the Detroit Institute of Arts. It was my favorite painting when I was little. My mom would take me to visit it.

How sweet!
Yes, we'd sit at the cafe together afterwards. And the profiles are of my husband and me. I traced our photos in Illustrator and experimented with colors; we also used the silhouettes as our Christmas card last year. The photo-booth photo was taken in France, where we lived for a few months.

What were you doing in France?
My husband was a consultant on international projects, so they sent us there for five months when we were newlyweds. It was the first time either of us had been to Europe. It was unbelievable.

What about the wave print in the middle?
My husband was in Tokyo for several months for another project. I went to visit and became obsessed with a Japanese paper store--I went fifteen times while I was there! They had beautiful silkscreened papers and prints and cards. I bought this print there.

Living20room

Your home reminds me of Jessie Randall's home, featured in the September 2006 issue of Domino.
That's one of my favorite Domino stories ever! It actually inspired our bedroom's wall color, which is exactly the same as hers--a creamy pinky taupe.
The brocade draperies are from Linens & Things; the chandelier is from West Elm.

Tell us about the art in the living room.
I wanted to do a floating frame arrangement on this wall, so I got Thomas O'Brien frames from Target. I couldn't figure out what to put in them, so I hung them up with nothing in them for a year! Finally, I decided to put in my favorite paper scraps and fabric swatches.

Great concept. And where did you get that amazing chair?
Target.

No!
A while ago, they did that global bazaar collection.

Fam20room20screen

Do you ever clash with husband over design ideas?
He doesn't feel as strongly as I do, but he's a really good sounding board. Some of my ideas are wacky, so he'll provide good, practical feedback. He's mostly concerned with the place looking comfortable and inviting.

I love the graphic elements throughout the family room.
I've always wanted to do a big wallpapered wall, but I'm afraid to commit to a wallpaper, since I'm not sure if I'd love it forever. So instead, I choose accessories with bold patterns, like the screen, which was on clearance at Spiegel.com.

Fam20room20ottoman

Do you shop online a lot?
We don't have many home boutiques in our Cleveland suburb, so I'm always looking online for unusual things. Jayson Home & Garden has unusual and sophisticated housewares. I like Clio Home for ceramics, and I'm always checking Bluefly and Craigslist.

Your home's decor looks so, well, expensive. It's amazing that you found almost everything on clearance or in a value store.
We moved from a tiny, tiny apartment in Chicago to a four-bedroom house, so we had to fill it up! I search for appealing pieces in stores like Target and figure out how to maximize them in my house. It's fun for me.

what i can't live without: baggu bags

Bag01_1
"I had a regular tote bag, but I always forgot it at home when I went to buy groceries. Luckily, I discovered Baggu Bags. Made of rip-stop nylon, each $8 bag can hold 25 lbs. They come in eight cheerful colors--my daughter's favorite is pink, of course. The best part: The bags fold up and fit into a 5"x5" pouch, so I just stick them in my purse and have them whenever I need them." --Rachel, Cookie reader, Pittsburgh, PA

No Bull

Sittingbullpillows

Sitting Bull, makers of oversize, comfy beanbag chairs, have just introduced these beauts designed by Michael Sieger. The bright colors and patterns make us want to buy about a hundred, especially because they're washable and water- and stain-resistant. And at about 6 feet long and 4.5 feet wide, siblings can share squabble-free.

As seen on: Designer's Library

Picture_9
We spotted this genius creation over on Designer's Library: Depending on how you place them, these wooden blocks can spell out "fish" in English and Japanese and make the shape of a fish. The blocks come in other words, too, such as bear, bird, horse, and monkey. How perfect for little bilingual babies.

Fine China

Jasper

Jasper Conran, who has been designing elegant styles for people since the late '70s, also clearly has an eye for china. Check out his new Blue Butterfly Collection at Wedgwood. His take on a classic Regency pattern is perfect for those who appreciate elegance with a bit of a modern edge. We've been lusting after his pieces in international design magazines for awhile, so we're stoked that they've come stateside.

House Tour: Dwell's Tree of Ghent

Ghent_outside

This L-shaped home of Belgian architect Dieter Van Everbroeck, girlfriend, chemist Bep De Reu, and 3-year-old daughter, Zoe, caught our eye in the latest issue of Dwell. The couple fell in love with a 300-year-old beech tree on the outskirts of the historic Flemish city of Ghent next to a bungalow for sale. They preserved the original boxy bungalow as much as possible and extended a wing that sat 90 degrees to the rest of the house to create a home that surrounds the tree. Now the tree feels like part of the interior, and it provides much welcome shade for the home during the summer. We also love how the family mixes a few bold colors with plenty of white.

Bigbuddy

Big Buddy is a playful new way to store toys. Created by a small German studio called Kerpers, Big Buddies are solid, roomy, and likely to be a hit with your kids. The only problem is which one to choose: Polar Bear, Frog, Monkey, Brown Bear, Cat or Pig?

What I Can't Live Without: Memo Collector

Chef_rack

"I repurposed this chef's order rack that I found at a restaurant supply store, and turned it into my memo station. All those little (yet crucial!) scraps that get misplaced--phone numbers, business cards, even ripped out pages of magazines--are stuck up right where I know to find them." --Kiera Coffee, Cookie's home editor

For Happier Strolls

Xploryorange

Just in case you aren't yet familiar with Stokke's Xplory, here are three reasons why we think it's fantastic:

1. It's the tallest stroller on the market--which not only saves you the pain of constantly bending over, it also means Baby's view isn't restricted to car bumpers and knees, and you can roll baby right up to the table in restaurants .

2. Now, the moveable parts are a different color, which helps take the guesswork out of folding, opening, and adjusting.

3. The three gorgeous new colors--orange, olive green, and creme--are helping to brighten up our winter.

splurge vs. steal: mini chairs

After the holidays, our pocketbooks are feeling a little lighter than usual. (I had to dig through my bag for change to pay for this morning's latte.) So, for 2008, we're launching a new Nesting category: Splurge vs. Steal. We'll show you lovely splurge-worthy pieces, as well as cheaper knock-offs. Let's start with kids' chairs...

SPLURGES:

Arm_chair_blue
The Eames child's armchair, $299, Eames child's side chair, $225, and Eames child's DCM chair, $299, are all 2/3 the size of the originals--but just as iconic.

Petitchaise
These brand-new Petit Chaise chairs, $185, are made from recyled furniture parts, so each has a distinct look. The chairs are officially launching this spring, but you can pre-order them through Bookhou's website.

Veloursblauwvoorgroota33b06
These custom-made mini armchairs, available in a range of fabrics, would bring a Victorian flair to any nursery. But at  299 to 499 euro, they'd also bring a dent to your wallet.

STEALS:

Vg0823
Bianca & Family offers vintage kids' furniture, including a 1960's rattan chair, 90 euro, yellow Casalino chair, 110 euro, and plastic kindergarten chair, 25 euro.

38270_pe130163_s4
But, of course, IKEA wins the day with their rattan Agen chair for $19.99 and a red Nyfiken children's chair at, no joke, $3.99. Funny, that was the price of my latte.

Modern Candlesticks

Primitive_wood_totems

We love these West Elm candlesticks. Made from solid wood, they're a nice alternative to all those spindly porcelain and glass variations--perfect for a mid-century design scheme. They come either 7 or 14 inches high in sets of two.

Shop the Catalog: Room & Board

Photo_catalog

Because she knows you haven't been able to leisurely flip through a catalog since your water broke, Cookie's market editor, Meryl Levin, shares her five favorite new pieces from the 2008 Room&Board catalog.

Wegner

1. Hans Wegner Sawbuck Chair, $2,550
"Designed in 1951 and reissued this year, it costs a pretty penny, but it's a gorgeous example of mid-century style, and the perfect accent chair for a casual living space."

Bradshawtable

2. Bradshaw Dining Table, $999
"A pedestal table for the modern set--I love this for a kitchen or small dining nook."

Haldenchair

3. Halden Dining Chairs, $249 (side chair), $299 (arm chair)
"These Scandinavian-inspired spindle-back seats are highly versatile, and they provide what all great dining chairs must: an eye-catching rear view."

Glider

4. Crofton Glider, $799
"Modern moms know how hard it is to find a clean-lined glider, but this one fits the bill. Plus, it rocks AND swivels."

Mumlight

5. Mum Pendant, from $329
"The bold hand-block pattern on the linen fabric makes this pendant feel both organic and playful--perfect for a breakfast nook or even in a foyer. I love how you can see the texture when the light shines through."

From the Magazine: Picture Frame

Doll2

In our February issue (on newsstands now), we suggested the idea of having a portrait made of your kid's favorite doll or stuffed animal. (Or let Easy123art.com create a paint-by-numbers kit from a photograph of it.) A few of you have written in wondering where the great, simple blue frame came from. It's Confetti #140640 from Larson-Juhl.

Class Up Your Beer

Beer

These were just too funny not to share. In this season of football playoffs, it's time to rethink the beer cozy. Etsy seller Aorta makes great ones with 1970's barkcloth on the outside and blue felt lining. Unlike the foam monstrosities emblazoned with Tigers, Falcons, or other ferocious animals, it will not only class up your Super Bowl spread but also fold flat and fit nicely in a drawer when it's all over.

And, because we know you're wondering, yes...they do fit tall boys.

Flying duck coat hooks

Thumb_flyingduckcoathooks

These Flying Duck Coat Hooks made us smile. We can't help but wonder, "Where will they take the scarves and coats? If I ask nicely, would they take us along as well?"

Available as a set of three (one small, one medium and one large duck) they come in green, orange, white and blue, and are guaranteed to brighten up any room in your home as well as make kids excited about hanging up their things after they blow through the door. The hooks are made from 2 mm powder-coated steel and come boxed complete with screws and wall fixings.

Designed by Jethro Macey and available at Hidden Art.

Impeccable Table Manners

Moss_2

She's done it yet again. Domestic genius Martha Stewart recently teamed up with Wedgwood to launch a gorgeous line of china, sold at Macy's. We especially love the Garland Moss pattern (above) because it's fresh, elegant, and somehow feels equal parts modern and heirloom. Maybe she'll conquer the nursery next? We can only hope...

Fantastic Furniture News

Atlantico3

We rejoiced back in 2006 when De La Espada, makers of beautiful modern wood furniture, launched a more affordable but equally lovely line called Atlantico. And we're equally psyched this month, because Atlantico has expanded their collection of Oak and Cherry casegoods to include the same clean-lined designs in wonderful, warm American Black Walnut. It's gorgeous and completely worth a couple of minutes of browsing.
