Let's Go to Reform School

Reformschool1

We have fallen for the home goodies at the hyper-cool shop Reform School. The people behind this clever site have put together an unusual collection of new and pretty items. We are especially digging the recycled glass night set, the tile coasters in vintage prints, the Josh Jakus egg flat and the Zaishu Cloth Stool. And that's just the Home Ec. department. Wait till you see the Locker Room.

Reformschool2

There's nothing like time spent in Reform School to improve your outlook.

Thanks to Nesting reader Laurie for the link to this great site.

We fell in love with these molded P.U. Elefants at first sight. Designed by dutch Richard Hutten, they can be used as a decorative object or seat. As if this wasn't enough to win us over, they are also available as a light. Now the only question is, should we put it in the kids' room or living room?

Knock, Knock: Photography Loft in New York City

It's hard to sum up Sue Hostetler. She writes and edits books, pens magazine articles, collects art and is a television commentator. Meanwhile, this tour-de-force also found time to decorate the Manhattan loft she shares with her husband Jon and their four-year-old daughter Spencer. Her design goal was understated glamour. Our response after looking at these photos? Mission accomplished.

Sue_standing_art_wallTell us about your apartment.
We bought this place about two years ago. We were looking for a townhouse, not a Soho loft, but we happened upon it and fell in love. It has 15-foot ceilings and a huge wall of almost floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook cobblestone streets. It's a magical, special space.

How do you like living in downtown Manhattan?
In my eyes, New York is the only place to live. Madonna recently said that New York's creative time is over, but I don't agree. We have Broadway, the finest museums, the best collections of art and the Moss store; Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan and Zac Posen live here...I constantly feel inspired.

Mom_and_daughter_2What's it like raising a daughter in the city?
She sees the whole gamut of life--the good, the bad and the ugly. I like that she's not sheltered. Hopefully it will result in a well-rounded and curious person.

Any cons?
I could do without the horror of applying to kindergarten and those sweltering summer days when the streets smell like urine!

FoyerYour art collection is amazing. When did you first become interested in art?
I took photography classes in college and studied at the Art Institute in Chicago. I started collecting inexpensive pieces, and it's grown from there.

Sue_and_art_wallWhich pieces of art do you especially love?
The first anniversary is paper, so my husband got me a beautiful Cartier Bresson photograph [above right]. Also, I did a book on ocean photographs and bought a few of those pieces. I loved working with those artists.

Living_room_with_tierney_photoWhat about this photograph by Tierney Gearon? I remember the controversy in England when the media likened it to child pornography.
One of the reasons we got the photograph was that I felt like the whole thing--Scotland Yard trying to shut down the show and saying it was pornographic--was ridiculous. It's an unsettling image, no doubt--they have masks and are naked--but they're little kids playing on the beach. It reminded me of 20 years ago when Sally Mann photographed her kids' every waking move, and her son had cut himself and she photographed him bleeding. People were shocked--how could she do that as a mother? How could she pick up a camera instead of helping him? I have a problem with people second-guessing mothers and telling them how to raise their children.

Living_room_bigIs any of the furniture off-limits to Spencer?
Having that main room is actually so much fun for Spencer and her friends. During play dates, they scream through the loft with their scooters and bikes. Our friends have a huge gate at the living room so the kids can't go in there, but I would never do that.

What is your favorite piece in the house?
Maybe the Jean Prouve bench. It's simple and chic and timeless. We got it at a Sotheby's auction.

What about the pony-skin chairs?
I love anything with a skin. So when I found beautiful 1940's French deco chairs at an Aspen furniture store, I had them done in pony skin. One of my biggest design mistakes ever was getting four of them made. We brought them home and everyone was like, Oh yeah, that's way too much pony skin.

Glass_doorsWhere do you spend the most time as a family?
The kitchen. Jon is the head chef, and Spencer and I are the sous chefs. We also love entertaining and sometimes have a chef come over to cook.

These candlesticks are fantastic!
I found them at Barney's. They're iridescent and really funky. We had a dinner party on New Year's Eve and one caught on fire. We all had been drinking for hours, and suddenly we looked up and the candelabra was in flames! Thank God the Paul Evans table is stainless steel. The candlesticks are by Sawaya and Moroni.

How did you decide on the dining chairs?
I liked the lucite chairs because you can see through them and let the table be the star of the show.

Sue_bookshelf I love the feel of this library.
It's our secret hideout. There are beautiful Jojoba wood shelves and no windows. We watch lots of movies here.

A bookcase with a ladder is everyone's fantasy.
We had the shelves custom made by a genius woodworking god in Brooklyn. He basically lived in our apartment while he measured, found the exact wood and installed them. My husband is a voracious reader and loves that old-world, men's club feel.

Study_2What does Spencer like reading at the moment?
Her favorite book for the longest time was The Giving Tree. I just adore that book.

Any TV shows you're addicted to?
My husband and I love House, and my daughter and I don't miss Project Runway. One of her favorite games is Project Runway. She's always Heidi, I play Nina and my husband is Tim Gunn. He does a dead-on impression.

Is the Eames lounge chair comfy?
Everyone loves Eames chairs but we recovered it in white leather to make it feel fresh.

SofaWhat inspires you?
Travel. We were in Napa last weekend visiting friends and I noticed how lots of the vineyards use old stone and reclaimed wood in their cellars. Both Jon and I are very into light and consider it an important design element. The slant of early morning light is really inspiring. Also, I get ideas from clothing fabrics and draping. There's a symbiotic relationship between fashion and decor. The photographs are by Edward Curtis.

Sofa2What advice would you give new decorators?
There's no pat formula. Don't be scared to mix and match prices, genres, patterns. Just be yourself. Life's too short to take it too seriously. The family, friends, love and joy that fill your home are much more important than the home itself.Mom_and_daughterAll photographs by Costa Picadas.

ICFF Wrap-Up

This week we visited the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, and got a sneak peak at the newest modern furnishings. Here, a few of our favorite sightings. Keep in mind, the pieces exhibited are not yet available for sale (snd some may not be available in the U.S. anytime in the near future). But they are still fun to look at! Desk American design house Herman Miller introduced a couple of fun new desks and office accessories. Vitra_chair This new chair from Vitra has a great silhouette and is extremely comfortable. Molo_lights Molo is finally going forward with these Urchin lights, which are so cute. You can manipulate the shape to be taller, squatter, etc. Table Spanish company Swalaline exhibited a number of cool and colorful furniture pieces. This table-and-chairs set is so fab, but sadly, there are no plans to sell it stateside just yet. Richard_schultz Richard Schultz, makers of cool sixties outdoor furniture, introduced a collection of "wingback" outdoor chairs in an array of bright colors. (There are pads, too, to make them a bit more comfortable.) Sva_booth This booth belongs to the School of Visual Arts in Philadelphia. Their students took Ikea chairs and interpreted them to express personality traits, like Stupid, Paranoid, Ambitious, etc. The giant chair makes you feel like Alice in Wonderland. Embroidered_chair This British artist makes one of a kind embroidered furniture by punching holes in reclaimed wooden pieces and stitching them with thick yarn. We want one!

Ridiculously Cute Plushes on Etsy

JeromeOk, call off the search. We've found the cutest little dolls in the world. Los-Angeles-based Debi van Zyl knits one-of-a-kind goofy creatures and sell them on her etsy shop. How adorable would they look sitting on a vintage chair? Forget our kids, we want these for ourselves!

Play Tent Round-up

If you're West of the Mississippi, school is probably already out for the summer. If you're in the Eastern half of the US, you've still got a few more weeks of class. But either way, it's the perfect time to think about creating a fantastic summer for your kids. We polled our own kids about what makes an ideal summer and the number one answer was: free time to play. And we said: right on.

One of best ways we've seen to inspire creative free play is having a portable or collapsible hideaway at your child's disposal. There's nothing quite like a cozy little private space to get their make-believe wheels turning. A tepee for a round of cowboys and Indians. A castle for the princess and her paparazzi. A little home for playing Mommy and Daddy and Baby.

Here's a round up of some of the best-looking options out there.

Tents1

Hippie Tipi play tent by Vessel in bold stripes of bold colors. Machine washable. Darling in the garden or the playroom.

Tents2

Home Sweet Play Home by Land of Nod in four shades of charming gingham--blue, green, pink and lavender. Hangs from the ceiling. Priced at less than $100. Sweet is right.

Tents3

Lots of excellent fabric choices offered for the play tents at Lucy & Michael. Quality materials. A simple, solid, one-window design. Pretty enough for the living room.

Tents4

Recycled Cardboard Structures by Paperpod. Available as a house or a rocket. Ready to be decorated or good-looking left as they are. Designed to be collapsed and stored at the end of play.

Tents5

Irresistible enclosures perfect for a playroom or bedroom--Blossom Sky and Knights Tent. They hang from the ceiling and come with a padded floor mat. Your child will want to move in and never leave.

Tents6

This six-foot Great Plains Tepee by Dexton feels so authentic. The neutral canvas will look good anywhere--or your rugged braves can paint it up with any permanent latex or oil-based paint. Their cowboy friends will be comfortable in this Rodeo Print Tent by Barn Dandy. Machine washable. The perfect spot for settling down after a long day's ride.

Make a Little Birdhouse in Your Soul

Katrinabirdhouse
We think we finally understand what They Might Be Giants meant. Take a look at these charming birdhouses in the Etsy shop of Reclaimed Wood Goods--handmade by Dal Carstens.

Dal lives in New Orleans, and after Katrina, he could see large amounts of weather-hardy wood like Cypress and Cedar being thrown in the garbage--what a shame to let that good wood go to waste! So he reclaimed the wood and built lodging for the neighborhood birds. It's inspiring to see something beautiful built from disaster.

We should note: these birdhouses have all the extras. Including screens on windows. For reals.

Knock, Knock: Well Curated Home in Los Angeles

Painter Melissa Moss lives with her musician husband and adorable baby (those cheeks!) in Los Angeles. Her artistic side shines through in the eclectic prints and retro touches, but her home still manages to feel calm and modern. We love the balance! Let's take a look inside...
Showletter14Where do you live?
We live in Culver City, Los Angeles, near the studios. It's beautiful and sunny every day.

Did the city feel different once you had a child?
Oh, yeah. It's a whole new world, a whole new set of worries. Suddenly I noticed graffiti everywhere. And I worried about the smog. When it's just yourself, you don't think about it; now I think about his little baby lungs breathing in that stuff.

Showletter4
Where did you find these retro posters?
The posters are from hatchshowprint. We have two from the Kentucky State Fair. They fit well with the enormous old stove.

Showletter3
What about this awesome chicken?
When you turn it on, it makes a squawking noise and walks and then the eggs pop out.

What does your son like to eat?
Puffs. They're first finger foods, they're sweet and melt in your mouth. He just loves them. He begs for them like a dog!

Showletter18What do you use your home office for?
I paint here and make my prints.

Showletter19Your three Marcel Dzama prints are fantastic.
One's an original. A few years ago, the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles was one of the first galleries to show his work. I went down there and flipped through drawers full of original drawings. Soon afterwards, Dzama just exploded.

Do you paint while your baby naps?
Unfortunately, Sam isn't a good napper. Literally, a half hour tops (I know). It's just enough time for me to eat something. When Sam goes to sleep at night, I force myself to paint even if I'm exhausted. My husband takes Fridays off--that's daddy day--so I paint then, too.

Showletter6Where do you hang out as a family?
The living room, where we relax and watch TV. My husband teases me for liking all the "deadbody" TV shows, like Law & Order.

What about movies?
We do "date night" once a week and we'll get a movie (this week we watched Juno) and make enormous salads with hardly any lettuce. Although the nights are the only time I have to paint and he has to do music, we've learned to set aside time to relax. It's important.

Showletter8Where did you get this fantastic chair?
On eBay. It cost $50, but was another $150 to ship! It's beautifully designed.

Showletter2Your house is so clean.
Well, before we took the photos, we moved the clutter from one corner to the other. It's scary what's outside the frame!
The duvet cover is from Ikea.

What's the best decorating advice you ever got?
My mom told me, don't just fill your house. Buy only the pieces you really love, even if you have to be with an empty house for a year.

ShowletterWhat are your favorite stores?
I really love Shelter in LA. Every time I go in there, I think, if I had to do it all over again, this is what I'd do. And it used to be, Oh, Ikea, it's so cheap, but now it actually has good stuff. I'd love one of their couches, but not right now with a spitting-up baby.

Showletter9What an amazing mobile!
My husband Ian made those; they're origami. When Sam woke up on Christmas morning, Ian had rigged them up on a guitar stand. It was Sam's first Christmas present.

Does Sam like them?
Yes. We have an air purifier, which makes them move in the breeze.

Showletter10What else does Sam like about his room?
The crib mobile is Sam's #1 thing. When he sees it, he lights up. He figured out how to turn it on a few months ago. So, now in the morning, when we hear the mobile start playing Mozart, we know he's up!
The Tiny Love Mobile is from Target.

Where did you find these prints?
I was obsessed with getting artwork for Sam before he was born. One print is from Ashleyg. Another is from Randy Kono from the Hive Gallery.

Your paintings are represented by two galleries. Do you also sell your art online?
Yes, selling online is amazing. You can keep the prices down, and you can get the word way out. I have people from India, Singapore, Turkey on my list.

Showletter13What books do you read together?
He loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar. If we try to introduce a new one, his little hands will go up and just shut it. He's like, nope, this isn't going to happen. I'm like, aren't you bored? I'm bored out of my mind.

Sam is such a little cutie!
He's ten months old. He just learned how to get back down from standing, which was a huge thing for all of us. He used to get stuck standing up.

Showletter16What else is he into?
He loves pulling things out of drawers. He hasn't mastered putting them back in. He just crawls away, like OK, my work is done!

Mother's Day: Ahava Dead Sea Treatments

800pxdead_sea_newspaper
Have you ever been to the Dead Sea? Apparently it's worth the (very long) trip. Like this guy (above), you can easily float in the water, and many believe that the salt has special healing and cosmetic effects.

As Mother's Day approaches, we're treating ourselves to this trio of Ahava beauty products, made with Dead Sea salt. The concentrated minerals help regenerate skin and leave skin feeling soft. This Sunday, we're looking forward to kissing our babies on the forehead and then locking ourselves in the bathroom with a stack of magazines, a steaming bath and these three green bottles.
