We received quite the present this morning from our friends across the hall at Domino when they passed along the latest addition to their family of incredible decorating guides. The Book of Decorating is packed with tips, tricks, and ideas on how to make the home that makes you happy. We're already thinking about how we can revamp our small entryway with some of their suggestions (graphic pop of color!). Plus, we love that they even included a chapter on kids' bedrooms.
For more of our suggestions on how to spruce up your home, check out our own home decorating guide.

Don't want to rent a blow-up castle for your daughter's birthday this year? But doubt that a sheet cake will be exciting enough for a newly minted five-year-old? Well, we just discovered that Miette candy store in San Francisco will host kids' birthday parties with magicians, ponies and even twirling ballerinas! What a dream.

We were surprised to see some of the Lawson-Fenning pieces in Nurseryworks's newest line. Though the company is known mostly for minimalist, modern furniture--these guys have a definite traditional flair to them. Wonder if this is trend that's going to take off.
Vale headboard, $625
Empire rocker, $1,100
Spindle crib, $1,350

We know. We might be approaching jack-o-lantern overload, but we couldn't resist showing you this hilarious take on the Halloween favorite from Instructables. These Mac-O-Lanterns are actually from last Halloween, but the idea is just so fantastic. These tech-geniuses revamped their old computers with a little paint and a JPEG file. We love the idea of taking traditional Halloween decorations and giving them a nice twist. (We just wish we had the computer savvy to wire these up for our haunted weekend.)

Flipping through the most recent Land of Nod catalog we were excited to discover Mojo Toy Box. It features a unique, throwback design that allows it to double as a toy box and a bench. And two roomy, easy-access storage compartments let you easily organize your kid's toys. Stylish, multi-functional--we're sold.

OK, you know those tourist-trap sidewalk stands that make name banners for your kids out of animal drawings? (They're usually next to the caricature guy.) It's hard to frame and be proud of that kind of neon craziness, but kids eat that stuff up. This is why we were so excited when we found Sticks and Stones. Just type your child's name, and they'll spell it using a series of actual black-and-white photographs of found objects (and mat and frame it for you). Plus, it's more likely to stay on the wall as your kid gets older. Nice idea.

While we won't count these as submissions to our Daily Find Halloween Giveaway (submit your jack-o-lantern photos before midnight Friday and you could win our favorite goodies!), we simply have to share Pilar Guzman's (Cookie's editor-in-chief) story of her annual carving tradition.
"Every Halloween since my older son Henry was a year old we, like many families, set aside the better part of our Sunday afternoon to carve pumpkins. It started out with my husband, Henry, my brother- and sister-in-laws, who live downstairs from us, and me.
Though it should be noted that this event historically has skewed male in our house for some reason: Perhaps because my husband and brother-in-law have been performing this ritual since childhood together, there is a kind of wordless project lockstep that happens that Henry seems to have penetrated completely. My sister-in-law and I quite happily play more a supporting meal-making and picture-taking role as we marvel at the total collective concentration. And now that my mother- and father-in law have just moved from Chicago to be near us, it has become a major family affair.
The messy de-seeding portion takes place on our front stoop. Grandpa Al, who is an avid fish fly tying hobbyist, was particularly adept at removing seeds for future toasting. Grandma, ever the efficiency expert, developed a perfect system for disposing the pumpkin innards while the rest of the clan carved lids. And since Henry insisted that we buy 8 large pumpkins for each member of our extended clan, we had to move the operation inside (we put newspaper across the dining room table) before we lost all of our light.
Henry (5) and even little Will (2) used a sharpie to plot the scariest faces they could imagine and the grownups carved them. We set them out on the stoop, lit them, and ushered in what is perhaps the most exciting event of the year."

We know how much kids (and you) love recording their growth with tick marks on a chart. But it's hard to find growth charts that aren't eyesores. We love this graphic pink flower ($40), the cartoony Jack and the Beanstalk mural ($40), and this cool surf board-shaped ruler ($150).
