Joanna Goddard, Cup of Jo
Stay-at-home mom Jora doesn't miss working. "I was an attorney, and my husband still is," she says. "But now I love staying home with my children, Charlie and Juliet. Until you have kids, I don't think you can predict how you'll feel. Now I'm into all the domestic stuff." (So much so, in fact, that she writes a blog called Domestic Reflections.) And if we had her house, we'd never want to leave either. Let's take a peek inside...
How did you find this amazing house?
We had been living in a tiny house but had completely outgrown it. We searched and searched for a new place, but couldn't find anything we liked. Finally we lucked out and found this house at exactly the right moment. It was meant to be.
It looks so cool at night.
It always reminds me of a dollhouse, where you can reach in and move all of the furniture around. I love all the windows. You definitely can't walk around naked!
Do the kids enjoy the pool?
They love it. When we moved in, we put Charlie through an intensive survival swim class. It wasn't fun at all, but for our peace of mind, we had to make sure our toddler could swim. Now he swims the whole length of the pool.

What's your favorite part of the house?
The big kitchen. In some houses, the woman hides out and prepares meals in the kitchen and no one sees the mess, but we wanted an open living space where I could see my family and hang out during parties. It's a generational thing--back then, the kitchen was the secret work station, now it's part of the living space.
What do you like to cook?
Soups, lasagna and chicken pot pies are always crowd-pleasers. I used to make more adult food, but now it has to be fast and simple for the kids. They love bland, cold and chewy!
I'm jealous of your windows.
San Diego has pretty mild weather all year, but we can see all the subtle changes. When it rains, the rain comes down all around you. You're in the middle of the storm.
Do you hang out on the fireplace ledge?
It's a perfect reading (or napping) nook. The kids and I love to snuggle there. The fireplace is double-sided, so I love that you get to experience the fire when you're in the living room, dining room and kitchen. I should hang a cast-iron post there and make soup!
What a fun chair.
It's a knock-off of the classic Le Courvoisier chair. The kids climb on it, it's not fancy. There's a great view of the outdoors and pool, so we like lying here and hanging out.
What ambiance did you want to create in your bedroom?
Our master bedroom was already very small, and we actually made it smaller to increase the size of the closets and bathroom. But I love that it is so peaceful and quiet. At night we open up the sliding doors; we feel the breeze and stare at the stars.
You keep the door open while you sleep?
Well, it leads onto a balcony, so it's safe. The house actually has eleven sliding doors, and every single room has access to the outside. It's going to be trouble when our kids are teenagers.
The bed and the bedside table are from the Case Study collection at Design Within Reach.
A women's sanctuary is her bathroom, right?
This is my favorite room in the house. It has tons of natural light, and I got my dream of having a separate tub and shower (a first for me!). I like to hide out in here.
Does Charlie like his orange bedroom?
I actually got the idea for the orange and olive combination from an old issue of Domino Magazine. Now Charlie loves to say, "My favorite color is orange." I guess we brainwashed him!
The dresser is from Argington. The tiles are from Flor. The elephant table is from ZidZid.
What are your kids into these days?
Juliet just started walking, so she wants to follow her brother around. Charlie has gone through the car phase, truck phase and dinosaur phase, and now he's into acting out parts of his life through toy horses and people. He sets them up and Juliet dives in the middle.
The hot-air balloon mobile is by Flensted.
Who takes care of these awesome chickens?
We have nine chickens that give us about a half dozen eggs per day! We had no idea that chickens would lay so much. I'm always like, those poor chickens! Can you imagine what your body must go through? I have so much respect for chickens now. Charlie fully takes care of them. They do a clucking noise when they lay eggs, so he'll go find them. I love that he knows where eggs come from and can take care of animals.
Do you guys eat all the eggs?
We couldn't possibly. When people come to dinner, we say, bring over your extra egg cartons!
