Handmade Valentines for Charity from Fred Flare

Speaking of valentines, the folks at Fred Flare came up with a brilliant idea this year. They asked their creative friends to make handmade valentines to be sold on their website to raise money for Elder Craftsman, a New York City-based organization that helps bring craft workshops to senior citizens.

Fred Flare is selling them as a blind assortment for just $4 here. Maybe you'll get one of the above made by Cookie staffers! How's that for sharing the love?

Check out these other great ideas for Valentine's Day.

World's Smallest Valentine

Wee_birdy It's a rule: Tiny things are always ALWAYS completely adorable. We just found the World's Smallest Valentine from Leafcutter Designs thanks to Wee Birdy.

The company (based in San Francisco) will transcribe up to 120 words of your own words into a 1x1.5 inch letter, stick it in a hand-addressed, stamped envelope, and even finish it off with a miniature wax seal with your initial on it. (It's sent in a larger package with a magnifying glass.) We know what our kids will be getting this Valentine's Day! See more photos and figure out how to order one by clicking here.

A Heart-Themed Baby Shower (We're Taking Notes!)

Brooke from Inchmark threw an absolutely gorgeous baby shower for her friend Emily. Let's take a look....
BabyshowerThe invitation featured four graphic hearts, since the baby was Emily's fourth.
Babyshower1Brooke and Emily's mom put together a quiz about Emily's childhood. "The best question was about her getting sent to the principal's office in second grade for throwing spitballs at the ceiling in the girl's bathroom," says Brooke.
Babyshower7Brooke stuck heart labels on water bottles and served pomegranate IZZE drinks. ("I'm not above choosing drinks solely on their color," she laughs.)
Babyshower2And the guests enjoyed blue and white sugar cookies, with a few red ones thrown in. Yum.

See more of the baby shower on Brooke's blog Inchmark. And congratulations, Emily!

Nursery Art: Counting Animal Number Prints

Milkmoonanimals2

Milkmoonanimals1

Milk Moon Kids is brand-spanking-new-on-the-scene, and we think they're a find! They offer stylistic and really beautiful Counting Animal number prints in orange/yellow and mint/chocolate. Hand-printed using custom mixed inks, they are framed in white and ready to hang.

These prints are a breath of fresh air in the Nursery Art department -- we can't stop staring at the compositions. The whole series is delightful, but if we had to pick a favorite it would be the rhinos. No, the giraffes. No, the rhinos. For sure the rhinos.

Link Studios Flat Pack Kids' Furniture

Link_chairs_with_girl Show us a mom who says she doesn't mind assembling her kids' furniture with an allen wrench and a couple of screwdrivers, and we'll show you a liar. This flat pack line from Link Studios is truly genius for the way the pieces slot together. It's customizable and made from highly renewable resources. Maybe you can even convince older kids that it's a giant puzzle, and they'll assemble it themselves...

As Seen On: Design*Sponge

Diy_notepad Things flying out of your head these days? Dates, names, gift ideas, movie recommendations, etc? We love this idea of transforming a matchbook into a tiny notepad from Derek & Lauren on Design*Sponge. But if you're worried about losing it in the black hole that is your purse, we're pretty sure your kid would dig them, too. See the full crafting instructions.

Knock, Knock: Simple Comfort in London

Joanna Goddard, Cup of JoDsc_00623Ok, we'll admit it: We'd love an invitation to Jane Cumberbatch's London house. Soft sofas, a rose-filled garden, and three happy children (plus, the requisite cat and dog) make it the kind of Holy-Grail home that we all dream of hanging out in. Let's take a peek inside, and ask Jane how exactly she does it...

Garden5What's it like in South London?
We live in a five-bedroom Victorian house. It's not downtown but equally not suburbia. It's a pretty good place for a family because it's close to some beautiful parks and good schools, yet you can nip on the train and be in the center of town in fifteen minutes.

Dsc_00032Do you have outdoor space?
We have a beautiful garden filled with my favorite roses.

Dsc_0022Can you tell us about your family?
My husband, Alastair, runs an organic chestnut business called Sierra Rica. We have three children, Tom, 19 (at Leeds University), Georgia, 17, and Grace, 14 (both at school locally), plus Rosie, our scatty half-lab-half-springer dog, and Bea, the black-and-white cat.

Painted_cupboardsWhat's your overall approach to decor?
I aim for simplicity and comfort, without spending a fortune.

What are three tips for creating a simple, happy home?
Be easy on yourself and don't aim for perfection: a home should be relaxed and welcoming, not glossy and squeaky clean. Let your children decorate their own spaces in the way they want them. Bring nature in at every season: jugs of herbs in the summer or bulbs in the spring, for example.

Kitchen_sinkWhy do you choose to have so much white in your home?
The color white enhances space and light, and it creates a blank canvas against which you can play with color.

Kitchen_and_collageWhat's one decorating mistake you think people often make?
Being a slave to color-coordinating everything.

Dsc_0205You have such lovely fabrics. What are some of your favorite textiles?
I love the simplicity and timeless style of checks and stripes. Other favorite prints include Liberty floral cottons and the bright cotton velvet textures from Sanderson.

Another_view_of_main_bedroomWhat inspires you when it comes to home decor?
Natural textures, like soft cottons, wool blankets and woven baskets.

BathroomHow do you manage to keep your home looking uncluttered, even though you have three kids? (Amazing!)
I'm pretty ruthless in restricting myself to things that are useful and good-looking. If you have less stuff around, it's easier to keep control of the clutter. But keeping a lid on the teenager clutter situation is demanding. My rule is that as long as they tidy up the house, they can do what they want with their own rooms. Interestingly, my youngest daughter seems to have caught my order bug, but the elder two are, let's say, a little more relaxed.

Georgies_room_and_bea_the_catWhat do your children think of the home's aesthetic? (Daughter Georgie's room is above.)
They love it--especially my son who really appreciates home after his first term away at university--but they do sometimes complain about the predominance of white. But then teenagers are rather fond of disagreeing with parents!

Dsc_0015Where do you shop for furniture and home accessories?
I'll go to Habitat, Ikea and John Lewis, but I also have a passion for picking up vintage and secondhand items from charity shops and car-boot sales.

91What's one of your favorite memories in your house?
Sitting round the fire at Christmas time, with candles and the gorgeous pine-needle smell from the tree.

Dsc_0004Jane Cumberbatch has written the book, Pure Style: Home and Garden, full of more amazing tips!
