Knock, Knock: Art-Inspired in Lexington, Kentucky

house-front.jpg
Christine White, an advertising executive for Equestrian magazine lives with her husband, Matt, and their soon-to-be 3-year-old daughter, Lucy, in a 90-year-old house they've renovated into a cozy home for themselves. Although they have plans to remodel the upstairs bathroom and add a master bathroom and second full bathroom for guests, we love what they've done so far:

crissi-livingroom.jpgWhere did you find all of the unique pieces in the foyer?
I bought the Starlight fixture from Sturbridge Yankee Workshop. I found the barley, twist-leg, drop leaf table at a secondhand store. The table is about 100 years old, and the best part is the beautiful flowers etched around the outside of the table. I found the painting on Etsy. The artist is Linda Monfort. I love her paintings! I had been looking at them for months and finally decided on one I had to have.

crissi-diningroom.jpgI love the mismatched dining-room set. Why did you choose to use both the
leopard-print cushions and the two ghost chairs?

The antique dining-room set was given to us by my husband’s mother, and we love it! I really like to mix modern with antique, and since the dining room opens up to the living room, I wanted to tie them together with an acrylic table in the living room and the ghost chairs in the dining room. I like the way the leopard print gives the room a more modern feel while the furniture is still inviting.

Where did you find the painting?
We bought the painting at an international nude art exhibit through the Lexington Art League.

crissi-kitchen.jpgAre those Lucy's drawings on the walls?
Yes. We don't have a lot of room to hang her art, so I tape them up around the kitchen, where I seem to spend the most of my time.

Did you have the island installed?
The kitchen was completely gutted and remodeled about a year and a half ago. Our kitchen is one of the smallest rooms in the house, so we chose white glass-front cabinets to open the space up and a black island with a walnut butcher-block top. The walnut butcher-block blends with the dark woods in the rest of house, and the black island grounds the space. I was thrilled to be able to incorporate some shelves for cookbooks and, on the other side, a wine rack.

crissi-bedroom.jpgHow did you choose the colors for your bedroom?
Our bedroom gets a lot of southern light, so I felt I could do something darker. The brown is a milk-chocolate tone that is cozy and easy to match bedding with. The rug is from Anthropologie.

Where did you get the paintings by the lamp?
The top painting was a push present from my husband. The bottom painting we got at what is called a reverse raffle with the Lexington Art League. You purchase a raffle ticket, and they sell as many tickets as they have pieces of art. The first person whose name is drawn gets to pick their favorite piece of art and so on and so forth. It is so much fun, and you always end up with a great piece of art!

lucy-3.jpgTell me about Lucy's room.
I started out wanting to do something different and not have it looking like a typical girl's room. I thought green would be more unique than pink or yellow, but once I added the pink curtains to match her crib bedding, I'm afraid I ended up down the path I tried to avoid. Nonetheless, I adore the way it turned out. I had the curtains custom made to match Lucy's crib bedding. I'm pleased that it seems to go with a lot more than the original bedding we had.

lucy-4.jpgIs that a custom piece of artwork above her bed?
I had the illustration commissioned especially for her. The artist's name is Tutu (Mary Ruth Maggard), and she makes these darling illustrations from paint chips! I wanted a Paris street scene that included a cafe named A La Lucy. This also happens to be one our favorite restaurants in Lexington, although it's spelled differently: A La Lucie. Tutu included miniature versions of Lucy and me in the illustration. This piece of art is very special.
