Updo Upgrades
It's something a mom does without thinking before picking up her baby, tying her toddler's shoe, or buckling the car seat: She throws her hair into a speedy, out-of-sight-out-of-mind updo. The result is functional, but calling it a hairstyle is a stretch. Trade in that on-the-fly, eyes-closed bun for one of these chic styles.

1. Apply a leave-in conditioner, like Dove Replenishing Mist ($5, drugstore.com), to "add elasticity and protect hair from any pulling," says Boston stylist Gretchen Monahan.

2. Part your hair down the middle, as if you were making two pigtails. Holding both sections, twist them back and toward each other.

3. Bring the ends of the twists into an unstructured arrangement at the nape of the neck, and secure them from underneath with a few pairs of crisscrossed bobby pins.

TIP: To get a firm grip with a bobby pin (and get away with using fewer of them), place the flat side against the head with the ridged side facing out.
