Moonlight Basin's two-bedroom town houses
The Hotels

Cowboy Heaven These charming two-bedroom log cabins (which can each sleep up to six) are the area's most comfortable digs for families. Best of all, they put you in ski-in, ski-out proximity of Moonlight Basin. Each cabin has a big kitchen and a hot tub; the decor is very "cozy western"—overstuffed furniture, lodge-pole beds, antler chandeliers. Guests can also use the gym and spa in the main lodge. From $499 a night, 1020 Montana, Highway 64, (877) 822-0430.

The Huntley LodgeThe 198-room hotel at the base of Big Sky is the best budget option. It has all the essentials, including an American restaurant, ski storage, and newly renovated rooms, which are plenty big, if somewhat motel-like. From $177 a night for a double, 1 Lone Mountain Trail, (800) 548-4486.

Left: The inviting main lodge at Moonlight Basin, where a concierge will book ski lessons or make dinner reservations, and a roaring fire works wonders as a mitten warmer.
