EATONS' RANCH
Wolf, Wyoming
Getting There
The closest airport is in Sheridan, a 30-minute drive away (the ranch will pick you up there free of charge). To get there, fly to Denver and catch a one-hour puddle-jumper plane. You can also fly in and out of Billings, Montana, which is two hours from Eatons', and then rent a car or arrange (for a price) for the ranch to pick you up.
When to Go
Eatons' is open from May 31 to September 30. The ranch is most crowded in June and July, and that's also when there's the most going on. The average temperature in summer is 85 degrees F, but it can climb into the 90s. We went at the end of August, when it was cooler and quieter.
Ages
Kids of any age are welcome, but they must be 6 or older to ride horses.
The Rooms
There are 51 cabins; request one along Wolf Creek, in the Gold Coast section of the ranch: They're larger, more private, and only slightly more expensive. The two-bedroom Jenkins cabin is a favorite with many regulars. The price may seem steep, but considering it includes three daily meals and all activities, it's pretty reasonable as dude ranches go. From $200 a night per adult, from $170 a night for ages 6 to 17, and from $145 for ages 5 and under.
The Food
It's hearty (steak, chili) but average. On the other hand, the dining hall's lively atmosphere—a throwback to sleepaway camp—makes you look forward to every meal.
The Activities
You go to Eatons' to stay at Eatons'; there's enough to do that you won't want to leave. Most guests spend at least half the day horseback riding or hiking through the property, but there's also a pool (huge, heated, and shaded) and a game room. In peak season, Eatons' hosts several rodeos and organizes regular games of softball and capture the flag on the front lawn. You can also rent fishing rods at the office (for $5) and fish for rainbow and brown trout in the creek.
