Central Austin

The neighborhoods in this area—Tarrytown, Bryker Woods, and Rosedale—were once on the western and northern edges of town. Austin's rapid growth over the past 20 years has had the effect of moving them to the center of town, making this a popular shopping hub. Locally owned and operated Amy's Ice Creams has 10 locations around town, including the new Central Austin flagship on Burnet Road. Central Market, this neighborhood's "ace in the hole," is a trendsetting grocery store, playground, and live-music hot spot. Plus, it has free balloons.

Eat

Upper Crust Bakery
4508 Burnet Rd., (512) 467-0102

Enjoy Austin's most famous cinnamon rolls and teatime treats.

Taco Shack
4412 Medical Pkwy., (512) 300-2112; closed Sundays

The Shack is a strong front-runner in Austin's intense "best breakfast taco" contest.

Shop

Fabby Darling
1601 West 38th Street, (512) 451-0455; closed Sundays

This epicenter of hip fashion for Austin teens and kids gets its moniker from a character in a children's book written by the owner.

Over the Rainbow
2727 Exposition Blvd., (512) 477-2954

Browse the excellent book selection at this old-fashioned toy store.

Do

Mayfield Park
3505 W. 35th St

Meander through the wooded trails at this tranquil 22-acre preserve on Lake Austin, just five minutes from downtown. You can cross the creeks on bridges and foot stones, and find peacocks and fish ponds.

Ramsey Park
4301 N. Rosedale Ave.

Within walking distance of Taco Shack and Upper Crust Bakery, Ramsey makes an ideal spot for an easy picnic breakfast or lunch. There's also a swimming pool.

Ace in the Hole

Central Market
4001 N. Lamar Blvd., (512) 206-1000

Buy organic produce and salsas not sold anywhere else. Park your group on the deck overlooking a playscape and you can dine, climb, and dance to live music under the oaks. Buy supper in the store or order from the café, which serves wine, beer, and homemade lemonade. This is a great place for the under-8 set to make friends.
