hotels

Northeast Portland

McMenamins Kennedy School

While not the city's most luxurious hotel, the Kennedy School's Detention Bar is much more fun than the principal's office. Kids will love that there's a swimming pool and a movie theatre (with mommy matinees, midweek movies at 1 P.M. to which parents are welcome to bring infants and during which crying is allowed) on site. Prices vary seasonally, from $125 for a queen and $104-$130 for a king; 5736 NE 33rd Ave., (503) 249-3983

Pearl District

Ace Hotel

The spacious rooms have fun etchings, Malin + Goetz bath products, and comfortable linens, and the lobby is decked out with a photo booth, a library, and free Stumptown coffee. There's also a fleet of Jorg and Olif bikes to help you get around town. From $95; 1022 SW Stark St., (503) 228-2277

Hotel deLuxe

The recently redone Hotel deLuxe has everything to offer, from iPod docking stations to a choice of spiritual texts and guidebooks to the Saturday farmers' market. Each room even has a "Make It So" button, summoning your very own fairy godmother to make your stay as comfortable as possible. From $149; 729 SW 15th Ave., (866) 986-8085

Hotel Monaco

While they don't necessarily have rooms decked out in Fisher Price, Kimpton hotels are full of little touches that make them amenable to families. This particular one has spacious, brightly colored rooms and is just steps away from the Max Light Rail and all the Pearl District's galleries and restaurants. From $159; 506 SW Washington St., (503) 222-0001

more restaurants

Northeast Portland

Taqueria Nueve

Taste authentic Mexican cuisine that even the pickiest child will devour. For less than $4 apiece, order a round of carne asada and pollo asada, filled with local, free-range organic meats. And don't forget to try the ceviche. 28 NE 28th Ave., (503) 236-6195

Southeast Portland

Petite Provence

Indulge your sweet side at this French-inspired boulangerie, where the neighborhood tots are as welcome and plentiful as the tasty tarts. Try the chocolate mousse cups (just $3!) after a luxurious meal of the Northwest smoked-salmon hash. 4834 SE Division St., (503) 233-1121

Iorio

This romantic yet relaxed restaurant features rich northwestern dishes, such as organic glazed chicken and a fresh catch of the day. Dietary- and allergy-conscious cooks and a commendable kids' menu that reaches beyond the usual chicken-and-fries make this a hot spot for discerning palates of all ages. 912 SE Hawthorne Blvd., (503) 445-4716

The Pearl District

Blue Plate

After working in Wolfgang Puck's kitchen, chef Jeff Reiter perfected the classics (like grilled cheese and tomato soup) with top-notch ingredients without losing the lunch counter feel. Follow it up with a classic banana split, made with Cascade Glacier ice cream. 308 SW Washington St., (503) 295-2583

The Daily Café

This bustling eatery is a favorite of neighborhood art-school students and well-heeled residents alike. Try the tarragon chicken salad. 902 NW 13th & Kearney Sts., (503) 242-1916

Babies on the Go Rentals

Started by a Portland grandmother, Babies on the Go will rent everything from strollers to toys. It'll also deliver, assemble, and pick up all equipment; however, there is a three-day minimum rental. (503) 246-2229.

Editor's Note: Prices and information have been updated as of June 2008.
