Folly Beach
The nickname of Folly Beach is "the Edge of America," and indeed, this six-mile-long barrier island is a little scruffy but full of character. Center Street is the main drag, with tons of beach shops (plastic flamingos and muscle tees, anyone?) and restaurants that offer platters of seafood fried six ways to Sunday. But the main attractions here are the sand and ocean. Whether your kids are aspiring surfers, fascinated by fishermen, or just want to play tag with the waves, you can rent beach chairs at the country park or boards from the shops and stake out your family's own little piece of paradise.
