Day 2
Hershey to Lebanon
13 milesWith farmhouses dotted around the famous theme park's grounds, Hershey's Chocolate World manages to retain a rural feel. At Hershey's (251 Park Blvd., 717-534-4900), take a seat on the Chocolate Tour and watch simulations of the inner workings of the factory. Head to the Hershey Pantry (801 E. Chocolate Ave., 717-533-7505) for grilled turkey club sandwiches and homemade chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. Back at the hotel, relax with the Chocolate Spa's most popular treatment, the Cocoa Massage.
Take Route 422 East to Lebanon, stopping in Annville to browse for antiques. In Lebanon, stop at Wertz Candies (718 Cumberland St., 717-273-0511) to try their specialty, opera fudge, a vanilla cream dipped in dark chocolate. Family member Jean Wertz (717-228-2086) creates edible paintings composed of chocolate, food coloring, and gold sugar. Stretch your legs in Lebanon's Union Canal Tunnel Park (25th St. and Union Canal Dr., 717-272-1473); walk on the towpath once trod by mules or climb the marked trails through the wooded hill by the canal. Follow it up with roast chicken or pizza from the wood-burning oven at Trattoria Fratelli (502 E. Lehman St., 717-273-1443, www.tratfrat.com, closed Sundays); try their El Rey chocolate opera-fudge torte for dessert.
