Day 3
Saugerties to New Marlborough
64 milesCross the Hudson via the scenic Rip Van Winkle Bridge. One mile south, tour Olana (Rte. 9G, 518-828-0135), the incredible Moorish-style hilltop home of 19th-century landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church.
Continue four miles north to Hudson. Its main drag, Warren Street, has more than 60 antique shops within five blocks. Young families congregate at Le Gamin Country (609 Warren St., 518-828-2885), which sells antique furniture in the back and has a cute café up front. Have lunch there, or try the barbecued-duck salad at Swoon Kitchenbar (340 Warren St., 518-822-8938).
Head 12 miles northeast for freshly baked treats from the huge natural-foods store at the biodynamic Hawthorne Valley Farm (327 Rte. 21C, Ghent, 518-672-7500). Six miles southwest, hit Rodgers Book Barn (467 Rodman Rd., Hillsdale, 518-325-3610), a real barn with secondhand books for kids and adults.
Spend the night 27 miles west in New Marlborough, Massachusetts, at the rustic-chic Lodging Barn at Gedney Farm (from $250 per night, Rte. 57, 413-229-3131).
