85 miles

Eleven miles northwest of New Marlborough is Great Barrington, the Berkshires' epicenter. Grab lunch to go at Rubiner's Cheesemongers & Grocers (264 Main St., 413-528-0488) and peruse Matrushka's (252 Main St., 413-528-6911) German toys. Then go 12 miles northeast to the Southfield Store (163 Norfolk Rd., Southfield, 413- 229-5050) for its famous croissants.

The Norman Rockwell Museum (9 Glendale Rd., 413-298-4100), 18 miles north in Stockbridge, has 700-plus works. Six miles northwest in Lenox, picnic at Tanglewood Music Center (297 West St., 413-637-1600).

Drive 11 miles west to Hancock Shaker Village (Rte. 20, 413-443-0188) for cow-milking and leather-weaving lessons. Then jump back into the present in North Adams, 26 miles northeast, at the modern-art-filled Mass MoCA (87 Marshall St., 413-662-2111). Crash across the street at the renovated row houses of Porches Inn (from $195 per night, 231 River St., 413- 664-0400).
