Activities

Homolovi Ruins State Park
A highlight for kids in the visitor center is an animal-tracking board with actual scat samples found within the park. Highway 87, Winslow; (928) 289-4106

Winslow Theatre
This beautiful 1920's theater is currently showing first-run movies and hopes to eventually add live performances and operate just as they did in their heyday. 115 N. Kinsley Ave., Winslow; (928) 289-4100

Meteor Crater
Originally the Museum of Astrogeology, the Meteor Crater is an interactive learning center with 24 exhibits, and with a wide range of activities—from movies to hiking through the crater outside. Meteor Crater Enterprises, Inc. I-40 at Exit 233, Winslow; (928) 289-5898

Walnut Canyon National Monument
For the hike, kids can check out a free backpack loaded with binoculars, a bird chart, a compass, a whistle, a Southwest field guide, and colored pencils. And parents can use complimentary Kelty Basecamp Backpack Carriers or snugglies for babies. The rim trail is a level 1/2-mile-long path with views of the 700-year-old cliff dwellings and pit ruins. The Island trail takes you deep into the canyon to experience more than 25 of the cave homes. E. Old Walnut Canyon Road and Walnut Canyon Road, Flagstaff; (928) 526-3367

Hotels

La Posada
Guests may find it difficult to tear themselves away from this architectural wonder, which restored Mary Coulter's vision for one of the last remaining Harvey House Railroad Hotels. Try the Hopi Pika Bread, made by smoothing blue maize paste over heated stones and rolling the paste as it dries to form a paper-thin blue scroll, and hummus made from organic reservation-grown tepary beans at Turquoise Room, the hotel's award-winning restuarant. From $99 for a standard room with two full beds, 303 E. Second St., Winslow; (928) 289-4366

Little America
Check into a retro replica of your grandmother's house, with service just as warm and welcoming. But the embroidered duvet and shams and elaborate iron chandeliers are offset by high-speed Internet access and large flat-screen plasma TVs. The hotel also has a 500-acre private forest with a two-mile walking trail, a fitness room, and a heated pool. From $160 for a room with two queen beds. 2515 East Butler Ave., Flagstaff; (928) 779-2741
