Camp Sherman
Lake Creek Lodge Resort

Stay in a cozy 2- or 3-bedroom cabin minutes from the Metolius River. Since 1920 the resort has allowed access to great trout fishing, hiking for all levels, kayaking and canoeing. 13375 SW Forest Service Rd. 1419, (541) 595-6331, from $125 in the off-season (October 1 through May 25).

Cave Junction
Out 'n' About Treesort

Stay in one of twelve unique tree houses designed by tree-house veteran Michael Garnier. Each dwelling has a memorable name (try the TreePee), and the highest is perched 37 feet up. 300 Page Creek Rd., (541) 592-2208, from $120 for a four-person tree house.

Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake Lodge

The intensely blue water, surrounded by starkly beautiful cliffs, is visible from the dining room, the Great Hall, and strategically placed claw-foot bathtubs in a few of the rooms (ask for 401, on the top floor). 1211 Avenue C, (888) 774-2728, from $138 for a ground-floor double.

Mount Hood National Forest
Timberline Lodge

Built in 1937 as part of FDR's Works Progress Administration, it is still a monument to one-of-a-kind artistry, with carvings, stonework, and weavings throughout. There are plenty of roomy accommodations for families, from a two-person suite with a fireplace to a ten-person chalet. Timberline Access Road, (800) 547-1406, from $135 for a double.

Portland
Ace Hotel

The spacious rooms include unique furniture, like custom desks constructed from salvaged wood, Malin + Goetz bath products, and comfortable linens, and the lobby is decked out with a photo booth, a library, and free Stumptown coffee. There's also a fleet of Jorg and Olif bikes to help you get around town and turntables for the aspiring disc jockey in some rooms. 1022 SW Stark St., (503) 228-2277, from $95 for a double.

Heathman Hotel

At the Heathman Hotel, the colors are splashy, and the service is especially accommodating. A bonus: You can order room service and a bottle of fine local wine from the award-winning restaurant. 1001 SW Broadway, (800) 551-0011, from $179 for a double.

Hotel deLuxe

The recently redone Hotel deLuxe has everything on offer, from iPod docking stations to a choice of spiritual texts and guidebooks to the Saturday farmers' market. Each room even has a "Make it so" button, summoning your very own fairy godmother to make your stay as comfortable as possible. 729 SW 15th Ave., (866) 895-2094, from $139 for a double.

Hotel Monaco

While they don't necessarily have rooms decked out in Fisher Price, Kimpton hotels are full of little touches that make them amenable to families. This particular one has spacious, brightly colored rooms and is just steps away from the Max Light Rail and all the Pearl District's galleries and restaurants. 506 SW Washington St., (503) 222-0001, from $159 for a double.

McMenamins Kennedy School

While not the city's most luxurious hotel, the Kennedy School's Detention Bar is much more fun than the principal's office. Kids will love that there's a swimming pool and a movie theater (with mommy matinees, midweek movies at 1 p.m. to which parents are welcome to bring infants and during which crying is allowed) on site. 5736 NE 33rd Ave., (503) 249-3983, from $99 for a double.
