St. John
Maho Bay Camps

What It Is: A cluster of 114 canvas tents on wood platforms set in the lush green hills of the Virgin Islands National Park.

The Rooms: The spacious tent-cottages have screened windows and open-air terraces, separate sleeping areas with twin beds, and a pullout couch in the living area. Each tent has electric outlets, lights, and fans.

Amenities: Barbecue areas and free water are available along the walkways. Guests use nearby bathhouses and can enjoy breakfast and dinner at the outdoor restaurant on one of two large pavilions. There is also a Maho Bay Store to stock up on frozen foods, produce, and other grocery items. Or visit the "help-yourself" center and pick up leftover books, sunscreen, and other staples left behind by other guests.

Activities: Visit the camp's Art Gallery to see handcrafted art and crafts in glass, clay, and textiles—all made from recycled materials. And with the ocean only minutes from your tent, it's easy to get in a day—or week—at the beach.

Cruz Bay, from $80 for a double-occupancy tent. (Children under 16 stay for free.)
