STANLEY

Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch

What it is: A 50-person guest ranch set on a thousand acres surrounded by the largest protected wilderness in Idaho.

The rooms: You can have your pick of log cabins or lodge rooms, but don't expect to be parked in front of the television here; there are no phones, televisions, or radios in the accommodations.

Amenities: Three nights every week, the ranch staff organizes lawn games and a crafts and story hour as a means of babysitting during the adult dinner hours. The ranch also offers showcase events that bring all sorts of experts to the ranch, from photographers who will teach you how to capture that perfect shot of the local wildlife to local wine makers who will discuss what it's like to be in the wine industry (wine samples are included).

Activities: You can fill your day with hiking or horseback riding in the Sawtooth Mountains or fishing in the Upper Salmon River area of the Sawtooth Valley. There are also opportunities to whitewater raft (depending on the season) in the area and to visit nearby hot springs. If your family is looking for an activity that is a little less active, you can leave the property to visit local ghost towns.

Details: IRMR Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch, Stanley, Idaho; from $412 a night for a regular cabin.
